Pictures of Chip Roe, Phil Berrell, and Pat Gaynor:

I'm not 100% on either challenger's last name. Whisper likes "Rowe" and "Barrow". My research of Arizona newspapers brings up citations for "Chip Roe" in the 80s and "Chip Rowe" in the 90s, so I'm going to use the former. There are about six different names that Phil's last name could be. I can't tell between "Barrow", "Barrell", "Barrel", "Berrell", "Berrel", or "Beryl". His interview says he had once worked as an aide for Sen. Proxmire (D-Wisc.)
Here are possible matches for a "Chip Rowe" and a "Phil[ip] Berroll":

I'm really loath to change it off Roe, because the 1980s newspaper references were made specifically to collegiate golf, and his contestant interview said he was the Arizona amateur golf champion of 1984.

Thank you for Berroll, though.

Here is some additional evidence:

Image

The above snippet from a 1986 issue of the alumni magazine for Arizona State's Thunderbird School of Global Management. That seems to match Chip the contestant being introduced as a cellular communications specialist two years prior. And here is a picture of Rowe from the Thunderbird School's 1975 yearbook, along with the image that you posted:

This is indeed the same Chip Rowe that I had previously suggested. I haven't been able to find anything that connects him with golf, though. As for the collegiate golf player that you found, here is his rather colorful obituary, and here are two images for reference (from the July 16, 1969 and July 14, 1970 editions of the Poughkeepsie Journal, so taken at the ages of 14 and 15):

That obituary describes Roe as being particularly tall, in case that does or doesn't match what you were able to see in the episode.

Is there a particular reason people with the last name Rowe/Row get stuck with the nickname "Chip"?

I went ahead and made the change to Rowe in the Archive. Thanks cheezguyty for the persuasive research work.

I note the college picture for Phil spells his surname with one "L", not two.

I found the obituary above when I was trying to solve the issue. Sounds like an interesting guy, probably would have had some fun interview segments.

Much amused by the Whisper transcription of the song lyrics in the DD at DJ!3 (WARS $600):

"Hang down your head, child, Julie / Hang down your head & cry / Hang down your head, child, Julie / Before you have to die"

Interestingly, the Kingston Trio was also mentioned in a clue earlier in the game.

DJ16: I know S1 liked to play fast and loose with the categories, but I'm not sure why the intended correct response fits—or why Bruce's response was accepted.

FJ: That betting wouldn't be out of place in 2023, to be honest.

The intended response was "Viaduct?"--which starts with "V".

The real question is why Alex didn't immediately accept Bruce's response and waited for Bruce to redundantly phrase it in the form of a question.

(FWIW, ChatGPT matched Bruce's [second] response.)

Notes:

This closes the book on Bruce Fauman's run.

Definitely one of the most dramatic games of the entire season.

J15: I don't know if that was on his card that way, but that's what Alex said, so we're getting the erratum tag.

J20: Alex's comment gets a note.

Good match and Margaret for the 1990 SCC.

Done, thanks so much. Margaret was a collector then going the opposite way to get rid of stuff and Alex gave up no info about her.

Further research on Tony suggests to me that he might have resided in Billerica, MA at the time of his appearance, but I'm only going off a public records listing that has him in Arlington in the mid-'90s and has Billerica as his "second previous residence place." (He also seems to be operating from Billerica currently.) In interviews he says he moved to the Boston area from NYC, but I bet the J! people favored a Masschusetts town over a big city "originally from." But I think there isn't a good reason to favor my speculation over info directly from the show, and unless and until something more definitive surfaces, what's there now should stand.

I couldn't find anything definitive on Bruce's last name; it could have been "Henny", "Henney", or "Henning".

Alex & the show did not have a good TELEVISION category.

This week was full of excitement, and this game was no different.

Thanks to games shared with Archivists, Michael Daunt game 3, 1995-12-04, has been entered: https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=8010

Holly Petraeus is the same Holly who was the subject of a clue in this game: https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=3862

$18,100 is believed to be the highest single-game Coryat of the 5-game era. One of the best performances of all time by Michael for sure.
