Sandy Alcantara of the Florida Marlins won the National League Cy Young Award, while Houston Astros pitcher Justin Verlander won the AL Cy Young. Both won unanimously, marking only the second time voting for the two Cy Youngs was unanimous. This previousl happened in 1968, sometimes called “The Year of the Pitcher,” when the Tigers' Denny McLain and the Cardinals' Bob Gibson won.

Taylor Swift swept the 2022 American Music Awards, winning every category she was nominated in (including Artist of the Year, Favorite Music Video, Favorite Female Pop Artist, Favorite Pop Album, Favorite Female Country Artist, and Favorite Country Album), extending her record as the most-awarded artist in AMAs history.

In other news, Bob Iger has returned as CEO of Disney, replacing his successor Bob Chapek, effective immediately, surprising everyone except those who have been listening to Bob Iger over the past few years, since just about every word out of his mouth has had the subtext of "I regret leaving and want to return because Chapek isn't doing what I would have done."

Three Honorary Academy Awards were given out today for their recipient's lifetime bodies of work:
* Peter Weir, the celebrated Australian director of films like Witness, Dead Poets Society, and The Truman Show
* Diane Warren, the American songwriter who has been nominated 13 times for the Best Original Song Oscar without winning
* Euzhan Palcy, a director from the Caribbean island of Martinique whose 1989 film A Dry White Season was the first movie from a major Hollywood studio directed by a Black woman

The Jean Hershholt Humanitarian Award was presented to Michael J. Fox.

New Roman Emperor confirmed: Sponsian
An ancient gold coin proves that a third century Roman emperor written out of history as a fictional character really did exist, scientists say.

The coin bearing the name of Sponsian and his portrait was found more than 300 years ago in Transylvania, once a far-flung outpost of the Roman empire.

Believed to be a fake, it had been locked away in a museum cupboard.

Now scientists say scratch marks visible under a microscope prove that it was in circulation 2,000 years ago.

August saw the publication of the novel "Heat 2", a prequel/sequel to the 1995 film. The credited authors are director Michael Mann and crime writer Meg Gardiner. This is Mann's first novel.

teapot37 wrote: Sat Sep 17, 2022 8:16 am The Phantom of the Opera has announced it will close its Broadway run in February of next year. Having opened on Broadway in January 1988, its 35 years and nearly 14000 performances are both Broadway records (the next longest run, of the 1996 revival of Chicago, has been going since November 1996 for about 10000 performances).
Somewhat predictably, Phantom of the Opera will not close because just announcing its closing caused broken records at the box office. We'll see if it really does close in April...

The title of the new Indiana Jones film (set in the middle of the Space Race in the late 1960s) will be Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Film nerd fight!

Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
, directed by Chantal Akerman, has topped the British Film Institute's Sight and Sound poll.

It is the first time a work directed by a woman has reached the top ten. The poll, which runs every decade, has been criticised for a lack of diversity.

The winning spot was held for 40 years by Orson Welles' Citizen Kane.
That'll be a LL question at some point...

In late November, the FBI shut down the piracy website Z-Library.

The site had grown in popularity and visibility as a hashtag on TikTok, with posters indiscreetly suggesting it as a source for bootlegged textbooks or popular literature.

Some Z-L users blamed the shutdown on fans of author Colleen Hoover, whose new book "It Starts with Us" (the sequel to her 2016 breakout "It Ends with Us") was a popular suggested download by the BookTok community.

(Part 2 in a series called "TikTok adjacent stuff Myron was familiar with, but couldn't pull the relevant name for LearnedLeague when the time came".)

Not to be confused with the ‘goblin mode’ made famous by Reddit’s relationship advice sub in 2022.

Argentina wins the World Cup, 3-3 (4-2 in penalties). Lionel Messi scored twice for Argentina, earning the last major trophy that eluded him (one of the greatest players of all time). Kylian Mbappe (who many argue is Messi's heir apparent as the greatest active soccer player) scored all 3 of France's goals. He was the 2nd player in World Cup history to have a hat trick in the final. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for most goals in the tournament. Messi won the Golden Ball as the best overall player.
