Ken had a big opening spiel about St. Patrick's Day, but if he was wearing any green, I didn't see it.

Thanks to WDBJ in Roanoke, VA, J! was on at 7:30PT this morning to get it on ahead of hoops.

Stephen trailed when each of the DDs were played, but by the FJ! round he was ahead. Mark went 1/4 on wagering clues, so tough to win that way. Kelly led when each DD played and if her closing game had been better she could have won more money if she had been in position needing to cover Stephen's possible 25200.

Stephen had a chance to sweep a six-game tape day, but was a border state away.

The FJ! clue had me sink myself immediately. I read the clue, took it in and never looked at it again. For whatever reason I processed 1890 as 1790 without spotting my error. My paper coin toss of staring at Vermont vs. Kentucky was a losing proposition when I settled on VT.

If I would have had a better reading comprehension level then I would like to think I get the FJ! clue right as I would have known how to connect the dots properly.

We'll see if Kelly can find a DD on Monday as the champ's spot has not been doing well in that department lately.

Wow. Is this the earliest a game has been entered into the archive?

Basic state stuff. Colorado = The Centennial State. Wyoming = The Equality State. It's even on Wyoming's state quarter.

I started the daily archiving in the fall of 2019 and WAKA had a 9:30CT airing at the time. More likely than not I got one in prior than the 9:45PT I was done this morning. Today was a special case with the VA affiliate airing early only because of the tourney. Archiving may not be done this early for the remainder of the season.

Why is J2 response italicized?

Stupidly put down Utah after not properly parsing the answer. Remembered the Equality State just as the music ended.

The ones that are genera in the binomial nomenclature.

The name of the band is T. Rex but the name of the animal is T. rex.

1. The Peter Allen lyric I Honestly Love You does not describe a way of loving. I suspect it means, "honestly, I love you."

2. Shoes in blackjack do nothing to keep a player from counting. The purpose of shoes is to protect the player; to keep a dishonest dealer from dealing the player the second card that comes out instead of the first one. Where the clue author may have gotten the idea that the shoe has something to do with card counting is that using many decks in the game, perhaps eight, makes counting more difficult than single deck blackjack.

When I saw how easy Final Jeopardy was, I pre-called Steven winning again, because an easy final favors whoever is ahead. Did he really not know that Wyoming is the Equality State and that Colorado is the Centennial State?

This game is a draw for the Strong Form of Shore’s Conjecture. The second-place player bet “small.” —Bob

LP is for "long-playing" record. The clue did not imply that LP stands for "licorice pizza", although that is an interesting coincidence. Instead, an LP visually resembles a pizza made of licorice. See the first paragraph here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Licorice_Pizza_(store)

The record store never makes an appearance or even has a mention in the movie, the working title of which was Soggy Bottom (for the waterbed company in the movie).

Can you imagine anybody going to see a movie called Soggy Bottom?

Somehow I misread the answer as having something to do with polygamy. But I was confused since I was pretty sure they banned it as a condition of joining the union and Congress didn’t back down. But by then I’d spent too much time on Utah I was stuck with it. Had it been LL I think I get it right.

Where the clue author may have gotten the idea that the shoe has something to do with card counting is that using many decks in the game, perhaps eight, makes counting more difficult than single deck blackjack.
While it's true that the original purpose of shoes was to thwart dishonest dealers, it also protects against card counting tactics.

Of course card counters typically track the ratio of big cards to small cards already played in addition to a side count of aces and that can be done ad infinitum no matter how many decks are used. But imagine the following scenario, 15 cards have been seen in a single deck game and none of them were aces. The player would have a huge advantage and therefore bet the max. In single deck games, even with poor penetration, these types of situations occur all the time because the 52 card deck sample size is small.

In your typical 8 deck shoe, the penetration is between 5 and 6 decks, but you rarely get the severely skewed ratios that you can in single deck. And even if you do, you've still got to plow through 4-5 decks to get to it. There's a reason why every single decent card counter would choose a hand dealt game over a shoe given the choice. Single deck games are stupid easy to beat, but the problem is if the player wagers optimally, it's simple to spot, get marked as a counter, and read the trespass act.

A shoe offers the casino another benefit in not having to shuffle as often. The shuffle time earns the casino no profit and they will shave every second of dead time they can to make a buck. And now, some shoes have automatic shufflers built inside. So the dealer takes the cards from the previous hand, feeds them back into the shoe where they are shuffled back in, and the card counters have no good play. And the casino now does not have to ever shuffle unless there's a mechanical error.
