Fourth Podium Poll for Thursday, June 8, 2023

Post by opusthepenguin »

You need to get ahead of Suresh's $12,800 and then get FJ. There's only $13,400 in trash which means most fourth podium winners will need to rely on DD2 to get them there. Fortunately, you only needed to pick up one of the previous two clues to lay claim to DD2.

SCORES GOING INTO FJ

Suresh Krishnan: 12800+4300=17100
David Ford: 4400-4200=200
Allison Strekal: 17000-8601=8399
CORRECT RESPONSES
JEOPARDY ROUND

SJ7 $400 HAIRY STYLES: mop top
SJ15 $400 CATCH OF THE DAY: bass
SJ19 $800 SILENT LETTER WORDS: gnarly
SJ20 $1000 SILENT LETTER WORDS: lacquer
SJ21 $200 2 PARTS MAKE A WHOLE: Home Depot
SJ26 $600 CATCH OF THE DAY: a carp (koi)
SJ27 $800 CATCH OF THE DAY: cod
SJ29 $1000 HAIRY STYLES: loaf
SJ30 $1000 CATCH OF THE DAY: permit

DOUBLE JEOPARDY ROUND

DJ2 $800 A "MID" CATEGORY: smidgen (smidge would presumably have been accepted as well)
DJ3 $1200 A "MID" CATEGORY: intimidation
DJ4 DD2 A "MID" CATEGORY: midwife
DJ22 $1200 LITERATURE: (Aldous) Huxley
DJ24 $2000 LITERATURE: Richard Powers
DJ25 $2000 A "MID" CATEGORY: amidships

FINAL JEOPARDY

$6000 even with an all-in on DD2. Not enough.

Clammed on bass but that would've been my guess. Got tangled up in the gnarly syntax and thought they were looking for a noun. Not wild about the claim that lacquer has a silent Q. Home Depot seemed like a gimme so I suspect they just hadn't got the hang of the category. Allison saved me from guessing salmon. Did not know that carp swim upstream. Should've connected ling with cod. Didn't. Never heard of a permit fish. Never heard of a license fish either, but that's what I would've guessed if forced.

Smidge not smidgen and counting it. Should've got intimidation but got tangled up in the syntax again. Midwife seemed obvious given the category. I wonder if David forgot what it was. It's a trivia chestnut, reliably showing up on Jeopardy!, that Jim Morrison's band was named after Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception. Can't say I've heard of Richard Powers. Can't say I'll remember him for next time. "Amidships" was easy given the diagram and "plural-sounding word".

Only Home Depot, smidge, and amidships, so getting FJ right was no help.

It looks like "midships" (without "a" at the beginning) could also be accepted.

Mop top, (clam on bass), lacquer, Home Depot, koi, (clam on loaf), (clam on permit), smidgen, midwife, Huxley, midships. If I hit the DD at the same spot in the game as it was hit and double up, I enter FJ with $9,200, not enough. But the correct responses I clammed on were worth $2,400 and came before the DD for the taking, so if I get those and still double up, I have $14,000, set up for success with my FJ get.
